Woman treated for such conditions as incontinence or uterine prolapse may use a vaginal pessary as part of her treatment plan. A pessary is a small doughnut-shaped object made of plastic or silicone that is inserted into the vagina or rectum and held in place by the pelvic floor muscles, similar to resistance training but for the pelvic floor. Pessaries come in different sizes and weights.
Oakdale Ob/Gyn doctors and nurse practitioners will fit you for a pessary at Oakdale Ob/Gyn clinics in Maple Grove or Plymouth. Sarah Manneh, M.D., sees patients at our Maple Grove location and Cheryl McCreary, CNP, sees patients at Plymouth.
Your first appointment will take approximately 30 minutes and you will be fitted with a pessary at this time. Some patients will need to try out more than one type or size of pessary during this visit to see which pessary works best.
After your fitting, you will come back to Oakdale Ob/Gyn every couple of months so we can check you for erosions and determine if there are any problems with your pessary. We will also remove your pessary and clean or resize it during your visit if needed.
