LEEP

Oakdale Ob/Gyn doctors perform several minimally invasive, same day in-office procedures. Loop Electrical Excision Procedure, or LEEP is a simple, in-office procedure that is often used following an abnormal pap test to diagnose or remove abnormal cells from the cervix (cervical dysplasia).

LEEP is an effective treatment for abnormal changes in cervical cells that may lead to cancer. It is comparable to cryotherapy (freezing) or laser (light) in treatment effectiveness. Tissue that is removed is examined for cancer that may be growing deep in the cervical tissue.

The Procedure

Following numbing of the cervix, a thin wire loop is inserted into the vagina and used to cut away a thin layer of abnormal tissue on the cervix. The procedure is usually painless and recovery is brief, lasting one to three days.

Your Oakdale Ob/Gyn doctor will talk with you about the risks of this procedure and potential complications.
