Intrauterine Device or IUD

An Intrauterine Device or IUD is a birth control option and is a small device that is inserted into the uterus through the vagina. There are two types available: a copper-containing device and a hormone-containing device.

  • Paragard:  a copper IUD that can remain in place for up to 10 years.  Paragard does not contain hormones. It works by preventing the sperm from joining with an egg. To learn more, visit www.paragard.com
  • Mirena:  a plastic IUD that contains the hormone progesterone and can remain in place for up to 5 years. To learn more, visit www.mirena-us.com

Getting an IUD

IUDs usually require 1 to 3 visits with your Oakdale Ob/Gyn provider. These include an office visit to discuss your IUD options and a visit to insert the IUD, which must be done while you are having your period. Sometimes a follow up visit is necessary, usually 1 month after your IUD insertion.

IUDs do not protect against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

To learn more or to determine if this is the right birth control option for you, talk with your Oakdale ObGyn doctor or nurse practitioner.
