Implanon is a small progestin-only (hormone) device inserted or implanted just under the skin in the inner, upper arm. The device is 4 cm in length and 2mm in diameter, about the size of a matchstick.
As a birth control option, Implanon works for 3 years to help prevent pregnancy. Failure to remove the Implanon device may result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or the inability to stop a drug-related adverse event.
An office visit is required for insertion and removal of the Implanon device. Patients who smoke, have blood clots, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease or have had breast cancer should not use Implanon.
To learn if this birth control option is right for you, talk with your Oakdale OBGYN doctor or nurse practitioner.
