Grant award helps moms with diabetes

Maple Grove, Minnesota (June 16, 2011) – Oakdale Obstetrics & Gynecology announced today that it is a recipient of a Fairview Physician Associates (FPA) grant to improve medical care in pregnant women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, or diabetes that develops during pregnancy. The grant, totaling $5,371 is part of the Edina-?based FPA’s annual small grant program to improve clinical quality, efficiency, patient and family experience within the FPA network of approximately 200 metro area independent and Fairview-?owned clinics.
An estimated four to 12 percent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes and two to 14 percent of those will have Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. Evidence suggests that some pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes do not follow recommended guidelines for diabetes testing after delivery. Up to 50% of women with a history of gestational diabetes will develop diabetes within 5 years of delivery. Left untreated, diabetes puts the new mother at risk for serious health concerns and puts subsequent children at risk for birth defects, delivery by cesarean or birth trauma.
Oakdale Ob/Gyn's grant will help establish protocols to screen women for diabetes after completion of their pregnancies. Blood glucose testing, counseling and referral to primary care providers and diabetes nurse educators for ongoing care will be part of the medical follow up.
"This grant supports our commitment to healthy women and babies and will help us to improve the care we provide," says Lori Wilcox, MD, Oakdale Ob/Gyn’s physician lead for the project.
