What Is Urogynecology?

Urogynecology is a specialized branch of gynecology that focuses on treating bladder and pelvic floor disorders. These issues can develop with age or from lifestyle choices, pelvic injuries, or trauma from childbirth.

Urogynecologists are trained to recommend pelvic floor strengthening exercises as well as reconstructive procedures that may reduce some of your symptoms.

When Should I See a Urogynecologist?

You should consider seeing a urogynecologist if you struggle with disruptive symptoms of incontinence or pelvic floor pain. Symptoms may include:

  • Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, or laughing
  • Tampons fall out or dislodge
  • A reduced sensation in the vagina
  • A feeling of heaviness in the vagina

You can work with a urogynecologist to determine the best treatment for your symptoms—whether that’s lifestyle changes, medications, or surgical treatments. They can also answer your related pelvic floor or bladder questions to help you better understand your body. Our experienced providers offer personalized care aimed at helping you achieve your healthiest life.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Many women who struggle with incontinence and pelvic pain may be experiencing early signs and symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). POP occurs when one of the pelvic organs drops from its normal position, causing pain and discomfort in the pelvic area. This is a common condition experienced by many women as they age, and something a urogynecologist is skilled at treating. With pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle changes, and—if needed—surgery, your symptoms can decrease.
