Services Loop Electrical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

Loop Electrical Excision Procedure, or LEEP, is a simple, in-office procedure that is often used following an abnormal pap test to diagnose or remove abnormal cells from the cervix. LEEP is an effective treatment for abnormal changes in cervical cells that may lead to cancer.

LEEP is comparable to cryotherapy (freezing) or laser (light) in treatment effectiveness. Tissue that is removed is examined for cancer that may be growing deep in the cervical tissue.

  • Procedure Information

LEEP is a short procedure generally performed in our offices during a time when you are not having your period. You’ll be given a local anesthetic to numb your cervix. Your doctor will insert a thin wire loop into your vagina and remove a thin layer of abnormal tissue on the cervix.

The procedure is usually painless and recovery is brief, lasting one to three days.

LEEP is a common, safe and effective procedure. However, like any medical procedure, there is a small risk of complications.

Talk with your doctor to learn more.

LEEP is an office procedure that will be performed at one of our clinics in Maple Grove, Plymouth, or Crystal.

We will call you to schedule your appointment. Your doctor will discuss the procedure with you and answer any questions you have. Shortly following the procedure, you should be able to go home.

You may experience mild cramping or bloody discharge; this is normal. If you have follow up questions or concerns, talk with your provider or our helpful triage nurses.
