Certified Nurse Midwives

At Oakdale ObGyn, you have the option to work with a certified nurse midwife. Certified nurse midwives are nurses with advanced education and training in obstetrics and gynecology. They have completed a national certification exam and are board-certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board, widely considered the gold standard in nurse midwifery certification.

Nurse midwives believe in an individualized, holistic, non-interventional approach to care. They believe pregnancy is a normal body process, and encourage patients and family members to be active participants in health care decisions. Midwives provide you with support to achieve the birth experience that you desire.

Pregnancy Care

Our nurse midwifery team offers an array of pregnancy services and is available on-site at Maple Grove Hospital 24 hours-a-day. In addition, we have an on call physician on-site 24 hours-a-day to offer support to our midwives should a need arise. Our nurse midwives help you to get a healthy start to motherhood by providing education and support throughout your journey.

  • Pregnancy care
  • Healthy pregnancy education and counseling
  • Labor and delivery at Maple Grove Hospital
  • Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)

During labor and delivery, nurse midwives work with women and their families to provide the best possible birthing experience.

Well-Woman Care

CNMs also provide a range of women’s health care services, from the teens through adulthood. These services include:

  • Annual exams/well-woman care
  • Problem-focused health concerns, such as vaginal infections or urinary tract infections
  • Pre-conception counseling and birth control
  • Patient education

CNMs also prescribe medications, order and interpret labs and diagnostic tests. They promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, and wellness counseling.

Meet Our Midwives

“This midwife team is AMAZING! I always felt so valued at my appointments, they truly took time to listen to my concerns and chat with me like a friend! I saw Annie and Jennifer for many appointments and they were SO understanding and made me feel empowered and relaxed leaving the clinic…

If I had any anxieties or fears they always calmed them and assured me that I was doing great and my body was doing what it was made to do! Pregnancy is such an uncharted territory each time, no matter if its your first baby or 5th baby they can all be so very different and it felt great to have a team that was highly knowledgable and skilled in pregnancy and birthing to help guide me through my births!

I have had 2 babies with them now and they made it a point to honor my birth plan and I’m beyond thrilled that they were able to help me have the natural births I was very much desiring! Debra was there through most of my first child’s labor (her entire shift) and Jennifer delivered my baby! They made the change so smooth I wouldn’t have even noticed. Debra delivered my second baby and made a darling hat for her — her first birthday present! I also so appreciated that the midwife that was on call came to visit me in my postpartum room — Bri and Nancy for my last birth! They didn’t rush me and kept me very informed and answered all my questions.

I can’t recommend this top notch midwifery team enough! I love how some of the midwives worked very hard to ensure some requests on my birth plan would be possible especially in the hospital setting. One thing I really wanted that was on my birth plan was to have the Doppler to check on the baby instead of the monitor during labor and it became a reality with my second pregnancy because of the hard work and dedication of the midwife. I remember thinking even during labor how grateful I was for the Doppler and not the monitor band and I wanted to hug the midwives who made that possible! I was able to focus more on my contractions and having that baby instead of being interrupted by the belt monitor. I am so in awe of how dedicated they are to making sure that Mom is safe and comfortable, and baby is safe and comfortable and again respecting the birth plan that you have shared with them as long as there are no concerns or emergencies.

These ladies care so much and their hearts are so big and they truly do give the best care in the world! It’s always very bittersweet when baby does come because obviously we are over the moon excited to have our baby here at last but super sad that we won’t get to see these amazing ladies anymore. My husband said as we were walking out of the hospital — “this Midwifery team it’s like a big family we have grown so close to them and it will be weird not to see them so much” they couldn’t agree more he hit it spot on ! When I became pregnant with my second child I was thrilled and very excited at the thought of seeing them again! They are seriously like great friends and one big happy family! I tell everyone about this team and I’m so thankful and blessed they are near where we live.”

“I chose to work with a midwife because I had heard they may be able to be more available to me for support through the labor and delivery process. My midwife made a great effort to be present with me when I went into labor and stayed with me until my son was born…

I felt like the experience of working with my midwife, as I delivered my baby, was very professional and also relaxed and laid back at the same time. I was aware and thankful that a doctor was on call if complications arose that required his or her presence. Overall, I was very happy with the experience of working with my midwife and would absolutely choose to work with her again.”
